I’ve made a career in fields where most people assume they are already an expert. Sportswriting. Email marketing. Social media. Ask anyone and they will tell you all that you need to know about each of those.

Social media might be the worst. Engaging in Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc., doesn’t make you an expert at marketing on those platforms. In fact, the more personal engagement can sometimes lead you farther from the truth. We believe our own experience is extrapolatable to the masses. That’s not always the case.
